The 2013 Dubai World Cup Carnival takes over the UAE
Starting on January 10, the 2013 Dubai World Cup Carnival will bring horse racing to a whole different level in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where the top thoroughbreds in the planet will come together for a series of epic meetings between the best and the greatest equine pure breeds in the sport of kings. Culminating with the Dubai World Cup on March 30, this will be the fourth year the horse racing spectacle brings the finest thoroughbreds in the sport to the Meydan Racecourse as it establishes its position as one of the premier horse racing gala events in the horse racing calendar.
With a whopping US$10M purse, it is certainly the richest. The three month long festival will showcase 11 high quality race meetings featuring 27 Groups and Listed races and US$38M in total prize money. Other high pursed races include the US$5M Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic and the Dubai Duty Free Cups plus several others with US$1M and US$2M purses.
''The success of the Dubai World Cup Carnival and the Dubai World Cup has brought international prominence to racing in Dubai and the UAE,'' Meydan Group Board Member and Chairman of the Racing Committee Mr. Malih Al Basti said. ''Each year we welcome the best in racing to Dubai for our Dubai World Cup Carnival, a season that is the goal of horsemen from around the world. It is our privilege to share our passion for this wonderful sport that connects the world through the power and beauty of the horse.''
Of course, as expected, all eyes will be on the main event, the 2013 Dubai World Cup, and one thoroughbred eyeing to win the richest day in horse racing is none other than Animal Kingdom, the 137th Kentucky Derby Winner in 2011. Animal Kingdom missed the 2012 Dubai Cup, citing lack of preparedness due to injury sustained during practice. This time round, the owners, Team Valor, together with Graham Motion, the trainer, has had sufficient time to prepare the thoroughbred colt. A win in Dubai will cap a fine racing career before he retires to stud in Australia under master breeder, John Messara. A win will boost his breeding legacy, which is expected to be a strong one, and further a second round of lucrative returns for his investors.
However, while Animal Kingdom heads to the race looking for a win, the possibility of the equine star's rival, Wise Dan, being there should be interesting. That's right horse racing fans, there's a huge possibility that Wise Dan, the winner of 2012’s Breeders Cup and one of the top candidates for Horse Of The Year honours, will be there to compete in Dubai, giving us what should be an enticing match - up in the greatest spectacle in horse racing.
