F1 - Italian Grand Prix

The 13th race of the 2012 F1 season is here as Formula One returns to Monza for this year's Italian Grand Prix. And heading to this year's showcase of the world's finest drivers in Italy, the Italians' own favourite team, Ferrari, has been having its issues as of late. Well, one half of the team anyway because Fernando Alonso is having a fantastic campaign.

I was referring to Felipe Massa and his half of the Ferrari camp. You see, in case you haven't been following the Brazilian's campaign this season, well, let's just say it's not much.

After almost winning the big one for Ferrari four years ago in 2008, when Massa lost the title on the final race of the season after Timo Glock let Lewis Hamilton pass on the final corner to let Hamilton finish the race in 5th place and win the title by a point, the Brazilian hasn't been the same since.

Yes, I guess after getting robbed of the title four years ago, Felipe Massa just can't seem to find that edge back anymore, as he continued to struggle in the years that followed, finishing 11th in 2009 before a couple of 6th place finishes in 2010 and 2011.

In the 2012 F1 season this year, Felipe Massa is heading towards yet another disappointing finish. And for the Italian fans looking for a one-two finish in Monza on September 9 for the Italian-based Ferrari team, they will be utterly disappointed. Sure, a Ferrari just might win it with the kind of season Fernando Alonso has been having as he continues to lead the drivers championship standings, but as far as Felipe Massa is concerned, I reckon he won't be anywhere near the podium.

Felipe Massa has been struggling a lot lately, so much so that there are rumours claiming that Ferrari will give the Brazilian the boot soon. As for Felipe, he claims this sort of thing is not new to him anymore.

''For many people it seems like this is the first time this has happened to me, but it is not. This has happened many times even before I entered Formula 1 where if I didn't win the race there was no money for the next,'' Felipe Massa said. ''Back then everyone was sure I would not continue with the team, that Kimi would be signed to partner Schumacher. (They even said) Valentino Rossi was going to take my place.''

''Every year there is something we have to deal with and get over. And this year I'm preparing and concentrating as much as possible to have a better second half of the Championship,'' Massa added. ''(I) will continue to drive for Ferrari, representing the flag of Brazil.''

Yeah. I guess that's all Felipe Massa can do at this point because, well, he really doesn't have a choice but to give it his all and start giving Ferrari the finishes that they want. And right now, his role is to help Ferrari score points to catch up to Red Bull in the race for the constructors title and help Fernando Alonso secure his spot at the top of the standings for the drivers championship.

Speaking of Fernando Alonso, he heads to Monza, Italy as the top contender for the drivers title this season. Already a double world champion, he's well on his way towards winning his third championship and if Felipe Massa can get his act together, it will only help Alonso in his quest to winning the 2012 F1 drivers title.

It may not look well for Felipe Massa right now but thanks to Fernando Alonso and the wonderful campaign he's been having, Ferrari is still looking good heading to their home race in Monza. I guess the Italian racing fans that will flock to Monza on September 9 will see what they paid to see after all, a Ferrari on the podium.
